How to Recover a Suspended Google Business Profile (And What Google Really Wants from You)
If your Google Business Profile gets suspended, it can feel like your business has been wiped off the map—literally. Clients can’t find you on Google, your Maps listing disappears, and worst of all, Google doesn’t tell you exactly why it happened. I speak from experience because I’ve had my own Google business profile suspended and I’ve went through the steps and got it reinstated in less than a week.
At Rhonda Cosgriff Designs, we’ve helped business owners recover from sudden suspensions, and we know exactly how high-stakes and frustrating this can be. Here’s how to navigate the process, avoid common pitfalls, and get your listing reinstated fast.
Why Google Suspends Business Profiles
Google doesn’t send a warning. You’ll usually just log in one day to see a suspension notice with zero context. The most common triggers include:
Violating business name formatting (e.g., keyword stuffing or adding location info that’s not part of your legal name)
Address issues (like using a residential address for a service area business without hiding it)
Listing a virtual office or P.O. box
Making major edits (business name, category, or location changes)
Spammy tactics or shared phone numbers across multiple listings
Step 1: Figure Out What Kind of Suspension You’re Dealing With
There are two types:
Soft suspension – Your listing is still visible to the public, but you lose management access.
Hard suspension – Your entire profile is removed from search and Maps.
Most suspensions are “hard,” and require a full reinstatement request.
Step 2: Review Google’s Guidelines Before Submitting an Appeal
Before you touch that appeal form, make sure your listing follows Google’s Business Profile guidelines in full. Even small issues (like adding “near Des Moines” to your business name) can result in denial.
Step 3: Gather Accepted Verification Documents
To prove your business is legitimate and tied to the claimed location, Google accepts the following documentation:
✅ Most Commonly Accepted:
Utility bill in the business name and address
Business license (state, county, or city level)
Tax document (e.g., IRS or state tax correspondence)
Business registration (e.g., Secretary of State docs)
DBA certificate
Official photos showing signage, entrance, and suite number
Street view photo of business exterior with signage
Website and social media with matching NAP (Name, Address, Phone)
📌 Google will reject screenshots, editable documents, or informal proof (like client invoices).
🔐 Pro Tip: Set Up a “Google Verification” Folder on Your Computer
We strongly recommend every business owner who manages a Google Business Profile create a folder on their computer (or cloud storage) labeled something like:
📁 Google Verification Docs
If your profile ever gets suspended, you’ll have everything ready to submit immediately.
Step 4: Submit a Reinstatement Request
You’ll need to:
Describe your business clearly
Explain why your profile follows all guidelines
Attach proper documentation (clear, high-quality files only)
Include photos if needed to prove physical signage or business setup
⏳ Important: You Only Have 90 Minutes to Upload Verification Documents
Once you click the link to verify your business after beginning the appeal process, you’ll have just 90 minutes to submit your supporting documentation.
If you miss that window, you may have to start the appeal all over again.
That’s why we recommend having your Google Verification folder ready before you file.
Step 5: Wait for a Response (and Stay Calm)
Google will usually respond within 7–14 business days. If they request more documentation, respond promptly and professionally.
If your appeal is denied, you can reply and clarify—but make sure your documents are flawless the second time.
What You Shouldn’t Do
❌ Don’t create a new profile (Google sees this as spammy behavior)
❌ Don’t guess your way through the form
❌ Don’t ignore their documentation requests or give excuses
❌ Don’t make changes to your profile once you’ve started the appeal
